Blogmas #5: Unpopular Opinions Tag

25 days of (1)

The unpopular opinions tag was created by The Book Archer.

A popular book or series you didn’t like.

I tried reading The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman because EVERYONE seemed to love it when it first came out. It is fantasy and under 200 pages by a popular author but I thought it was just plain weird. I love mysterious books but this one was a DNF for me.

A Popular Book or series that every one else seems to hate but you love.

When the 3rd book of Mara Dyer came out it I noticed the series received a lot hate because of the ending. I actually love the Mara Dyer series. The books are really creepy and compelling. You are constantly trying to figure out if Mara is crazy, everyone else is crazy, or maybe if you are haha. It is one of my favorite ya series!

A Love Triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with OR an OTP that you don’t like.

Spoiler Alert for The Hunger Games

I wish Katniss would have ended up with Gale in The Hunger Games. Don’t get me wrong, Peeta is ok but I feel like Katniss and Gale were better together and meant to be. I think Gale was more sincere than Peeta. I know that Gale left because Katniss wouldn’t have forgave him over the bomb he helped create but still.

A popular book Genre that you hardly reach for.

I RARELY pick up a Contemporary book. I enjoy action packed books more than drama and angst. There have been a few Contemporaries that I really enjoyed but I don’t read them very often. I may have to make that a challenge for next year! I feel like Contemporaries are one of the most popular genres.

A popular or beloved character that you do not like.

I am going to say Elisa from The Girl of Fire and Thorns. I thought the book was “ok” but not my favorite. Mainly because I thought Elisa was extremely annoying. I did love the diversity of the main character BUT I don’t know I just didn’t like her. I feel like everyone raves and raves about this series but I just feel so meh about it.

A popular author that you can’t seem to get into.

Rainbow Rowell. I have read a couple of her books but I just can’t get on the Rainbow Rowell bandwagon. I know everyone loves her books and writing style, but they are just meh in my opinion.

A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing. (examples “lost princess”, corrupt ruler, love triangles, etc.)

There are a lot of tropes that I am super tired of seeing but I think number one on my list is instalove. I don’t get why relationships don’t grow more “naturally” in books especially if it is a series. If it is a series there is lots of time to develop the relationship so it just doesn’t make sense to me. It is SO overdone and completely unrealistic. I frequently lower ratings of books if I come across instalove.

A popular series that you have no interest in reading.

A popular series that I haven’t wanted to read is Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Loads of people love the series like crazy but I just don’t care to pick it up. I don’t know why, really.

The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or T.V. show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?

I think I actually prefer the Vampire Diaries TV show more than the books. I like both but I think the TV show is pretty good and maybe a little better! I don’t prefer the Harry Potter movies over the books, but I think they are done so well that I love the books and movies equally. I had to throw that out there.

What is a popular book you didn’t care for? Did you miss Blogmas Day 4?

  2. I don’t read a lot of contemporaries either, most of them just don’t interest me because I want drama and angst too. I’m actually surprised that I’m enjoying Eleanor & Park so much right now though, because it’s contemporary (and romance!) and I really didn’t like Fangirl. And you’re not missing much by not reading Miss Peregrine’s, it’s so overrated and not scary at all imo.

I read Eleanor and Park a while back and I thought that one was OK! But, yeah, sometimes I find a contemporary that I like but most of the time I do better with the action packed books. And believe me I don’t want to encourage a reading slump haha. :)
